I don’t know what the fuck happened, apparently CBC suspened the broadcast last week, so Tokyo MX will be airing it on Sundays. I thought something was up when I didn’t see any subs or raws out, so I guess that explains it. A real bitch since it was a great show, but 2 days aren’t too bad I suppose.

Black★Rock Shooter

July 29, 2010

God, the hype. The video (below) launched quite a craze, combining Miku and supercell to make a fan orgasm that somehow spawned a 50 minute OVA.

With quite a team behind it,Yamamoto Yutaka, Tanigawa Nagaru, and some others, I did expect it to be at least pretty good, and it was. Although it did leave much to be desired, I’m sure it was sufficient to satiate most of the fans who begged for it. The story was kind of iffy, but it was there, and it was interested, and I would have liked to see it developed more, but I suppose this is all (for now perhaps) The constant flashes to battle scenes with Black Rock Shooter and some other girl, mixed in with the school life story were kinda odd, and seemed to be there mostly to show off the art, although the art was good, so it’s no big deal, and it did fit in to the other story. Speaking of which, the story is actually a school themed affair, about 2 girls who meet in their first year of Junior High. It was your typical thing, but it got interesting when, after being put in different classes, one becomes jealous of the others new friend. From what I’ve gathered, Black Rock Shooter’s job is to rescue people from whatever evil gets into them, such as the case of the first girl (which she got her ass kicked in) and the second girl, said jealous girl, which would explain why she kept holding her hand out to them. An interesting idea, but it could have used more development, but hey, it’s a 50 minute OVA. However, it was initially intended to be longer, even a series, but somehow got cut down to an OVA. All in all, it may not have lived up to some peoples hopes, but considering the amount of hype, I can understand why you’d be disappointed. However, I still thought it was actually pretty good, even if you’re not that big of a Miku fan.

Kona’s Anime: Kaiba

July 13, 2010

Sorry about the hiatus, but I’m afraid I still won’t be free, but I think a week was enough without a post so I’ll take a quick break and fill in the gap with one of my favorite animes. Kaiba is a science fiction story about a world where memories can be altered as you see fit, and bodies can be bought and sold. It starts off with Kaiba, a man with a hole in his chest, no memories, and the picture of a girl he doesn’t remember. It’s a short series, but wonderful. The art is beautiful and unique (you will quickly get used to it and come to love it) It’s a world of greed, corruption, a world he must travel to uncover his memories and find the woman in the picture.

Mitsudomoe Ep. 1

July 5, 2010

Oh boy, I was waiting for this one, and the early release was a treat. Not having much to expect from this season, this was supposed to be the highlight of the summer (after Ookami that is) I’ve read the manga and they’ve stayed true to the manga’s formula, though I was a bit disappointed with the shift to a more moe style in the show, which has deterred some people I’ve talked to about it, and it can affect the jokes at times, but not enough to make this a failure. This show is based on the manga of the same name, and is about Japan’s most dissimilar triplets, the Marui Sisters and pretty much how they torture their teacher. The first episode covers the first 3 chapters of the manga, which fortunately means Nipples, the hamster.  Like I said, I wasn’t a big fan of the cuter style, but the animation is very well done, as you can tell from the fight scene in the beginning. The 3 girls shenanigans are great, like Futaba’s battle to the death with the rest of the class, Mitsuba’s sadistic use of other students as chairs, and Hitoha scarring Yabe by shoving her porn in his face. The summer season looked rather uninteresting but I’m glad to have this and Ookami.

Poster for Amagami SS

Summer season is upon us, and the first episode of Amagami SS has aired. Based off of the galge for the PS2, Amagami SS is a romance following Tachibana Junichi, a second year high school student, who remains heartbroken after his girlfriend never showed up for a date two years before. However, even now, he is presented with new opportunities for love. This anime follows an ‘omnibus’ format, meaning that there will be a separate arc occurring in a different timeline for each of the six paths.

With that out of the way, time to get to the impressions. First off, the main character Junichi seems to be a rather bland guy. He’s pretty much your basic definition of generic galge protagonist. His character design is simple and his personality is rather weak and doesn’t stand out. His only distinguishing quality seems to be the ‘planetarium’ set up in his closet. However, even that doesn’t go too deep, and all he does is reflect upon his lost girlfriend in there.

While it’s not uncommon for characters to have some sort of tragic past, having a girlfriend not come on a date is a bit weak. Junichi must have been really heartbroken to be crushed and angst about it for two whole years, unable to have a happy Christmas. This however does become interesting in that he must get over it to go out with another girl. He might become hesitant, fearing that he will get crushed again… Which can’t really be seen in the first episode, seeing that he confesses his love to Morishima after two weeks.

I’ll continue watching this series, despite its faults. The graphics and sound are quite high quality, and I’m interested in how Junichi will handle the challenge of winning Morishima over when he isn’t her type. I’m hoping that Junichi will man up and pull off some epic Elite Beat Agent style actions to win her over, but that probably won’t happen. All in all, Amagami SS seems to be an alright show to follow for now. It isn’t the greatest or the most interesting, but I’m hoping for it to be a peaceful and beautiful show.

Summer season isn’t too far off and it’s about time we start picking out what we’ll be watching, either guaranteed and probably

I’m not really looking forward for much this season unfortunately, so I won’t have much

Kona

Guaranteed

Ookami-san to Shichinin No Nakamatachi

It looks like it’ll be the biggest winner of the season, I’m anticipating this to be damn good. Interesting story and some good looking artwork, I have high hopes for it

Mitsudomoe

The only one from this season I have any beforehand experience with, I can’t wait for it. I’ve read the manga which is pretty damn funny, and I can only see the animation being just as hilarious and full of the girls shenanigans.

Probably

Highschool of the Dead

This season is all about horror, and although I never cared much for horror, I thought I’d give some of these a try, including this one. I mean, it has fucking zombies. You don’t have to like horror to love zombies.

Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin

More of an impulse pick, it seems worth a try, and I may end up being surprised. Spring was surprising as well, so perhaps.

Shiki

It seems to have potential, but I’m worried it might just be another horror mystery show. But heres to hoping.

Sora No Woto Ep. 7.5

June 29, 2010

Sora No Woto concluded it’s run back in winter, and I recently watched it, and I quite enjoyed it. I know a lot of people were staying away, probably because some thought it would be K-ON in the army (3rd season, oh god) and the characters sure as hell looked like them. But I did like it though. It was cute, but not like MOEUGUU, it was funny (this was probably the funniest episode) and it was also rather beautiful at times (dat ending) So if you haven’t watched because of your paranoia caused by an overdose of moe, I’d give this one a chance. It’s short, and it’s good.

After the series concluded, there were 2 special episodes to be released, one on June 23rd and the second in September. I suppose both will be just comedic episodes, since I don’t really think anything needs to be wrapped up, and if the second is anything like this, I will be pleased. For those of you who have watched the show know that the girls run an illegal distillery at the fort and the church nor Kanata know about it. However, Yumina comes over and sees Kureha using alcohol and goes on a rant about drinking underage, and Kanata has caught Rio in the doorway of the distillery. As they all desperately try to change the subject to prevent either of them from finding out, the clever commander spikes everyones tea with some of the calvados. I knew she was a ballsy girl, but to actually inebriate her friends on purpose is pretty sly. With everyone sufficiently drunk, except for Kureha, who is the only one with the tolerance to not get drunk and unfortunately has to witness the atrocities, Filicia proposes a game of war using water guns and blood colored dye, which, if Kanata’s team manages to win, will result in the truth being revealed. It was amusing to see Yumina join in the festivities, although it might have been mostly the alcohol at work, and Noel turns into a crazed warrior delighted with the fact that she can try out a new toy (a water spewing gatling gun, oh my) The whole battle turns into a melodramatic fight, mostly thanks to the alcohol. I’m sure had they all been sober, they wouldn’t have been so dramatic, although they always were a bit weird. Watching Noel being pushed around in her cart with her gun was pretty funny, and I loved how they all reacted to the death of their comrades, such as Rio’s revenge for the death of Filicia, and Yumina’s tearful “death” in the arms of Kanata. Even better probably was how Kureha was constantly pushed onto the sides whenever she tried to bring some reason to the place. Thankfully for Kureha though, they finish the fight and take a bath, but are then greeted by a dead drunk Yumina, and Filicia, always on the lookout for a chance to get drunk, convinces everyone to get drunk, and expose Kureha to even more horrors, even being stripped naked by the drunken women. Just goes to show, it sucks to be the only one sober.
